Rethinking the Feature Wall: How to Design a Cohesive, Beautiful Space

We’ve all seen them — the classic feature wall or accent wall: one wall painted in a bold or contrasting colour to “add interest” to a room. It’s a popular instinct in interior design, and in some spaces it can absolutely work.
But more often? It leads to a room that feels fragmented — one wall dominating while the rest of the space struggles to connect.
At Mogra Interiors, our design philosophy is rooted in creating calm, harmonious spaces where every element contributes to an elevated, cohesive whole. And while accent walls can have their place, we believe there are often more thoughtful ways to bring beauty, depth and interest to a room — without disrupting the flow.
Why a Bold Feature Wall Can Feel ‘Off’
When a feature wall is used as a quick fix — with a random paint colour or a wall chosen without considering the room’s architecture — it can throw off the proportions and balance of a space.
Rather than enhancing the room, it pulls the eye to one spot — and not always for the right reasons. The result? A space that feels visually disjointed, rather than calm and considered.
How We Add Interest — The Mogra Approach
At Mogra Interiors, our approach is always thoughtful and considered. Rather than relying on stark paint contrasts, we often recommend creating a ‘feature moment’ in more refined ways — such as:
Paint all four walls — and the ceiling — in a rich, enveloping colour. Don’t forget the ceiling — it’s the ‘fifth wall’, and painting it can create true calm and cohesion.

Layer in artwork for personality and visual focus - a softer, more elevated way to create a focal point.

Introduce beautiful materials — bespoke joinery, wall panelling, textural finishes such as limewash

Use furnishings, textures and lighting to bring interest and depth — rather than relying on one painted wall.

With these techniques, the room feels more balanced, welcoming and refined — a space that draws you in rather than shouting for attention.
Our Rule of Thumb
If an accent wall doesn’t serve a clear architectural or visual purpose, we always encourage pausing to reconsider. A cohesive, layered space will almost always feel more calm, timeless and elevated than one designed around a single standout wall.
If you’re planning a room redesign and wondering how to add beauty, character and calm to your space — there are many thoughtful ways to do so, far beyond a bold feature wall. And if you’d like help creating an interior that feels elevated, balanced and entirely your own — we’d love to hear from you.
